Medication Assisted Treatment in State Correctional Facilities

Focus Explore

This preliminary dataset examines the laws and policies on medication assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid use disorder at state correctional facilities. The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has approved three drugs for the treatment of opioid use disorder: buprenorphine, methadone, and naltrexone. Currently, Rhode Island is the only state that offers all three FDA-approved medications for MAT to all state inmates.  Some states provide all three medications at some of their correctional facilities. We plan on expanding this dataset to include states that provide some, but not all, FDA-approved medications for MAT.

This dataset is cross-sectional, capturing currently effective laws and policies valid through August 1, 2019.

NOTE: This dataset represents preliminary findings; we plan to further develop this dataset in the coming months. In the meantime, please be sure to consult additional sources during your research. Check back for the final results.
